Eiffel Tower Paris France

Named after its creator, Gustave Eiffel, the Tour DEiffel has adorned the French capital of Paris for more than a century. It was erected in 1886 in record time and can be seen from almost every square and tiny lane in Paris.

The eye is first drawn to its sturdy steel girders and weight-bearing transverse poles which are held in place by about 2.5 million rivets, an amazing technical achievement of its time.

From the airy heights of the first viewing platform, there is a wonderful multi-directional panorama across Paris. On the higher viewing platforms the air is thinner but the views are increasingly spectacular. The Trocadero, Arc De Triomph, and Sacre Coeur, indeed, the whole of Paris are the distant earthbound stars of this visual experience which towers over one of the mostbeautiful and charming citys in the world. Global Treasures - Avignon Provence - France

Avignon

A famous song that features a bridge takes us into the French Provencal town of Avignon.Sur Le Pont DAvignon: thus begins the world famous French song that is familiar with both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the Pont Saint Énézet Bridge.

Internal disputes in addition to power struggles in Rome transformed Avignon into the new seat of the Pontificate. The impressive Popes Palace dominates the centre of the town. Its exterior resembles a military fortress rather than a religious residence.

A coat of arms above the main entrance is reminiscent of the papal court that was founded by Klemens The Sixth. In 1348 he bought Avignon for 80,000 gold ducats from Johanna The First, Queen of Sicily. During his term of office he added a new, more luxurious building to the Old Palace that was constructed between 1334 and 1342. The beauty of the palace manifests itself in the numerous terraces and towers that were used for defensive purposes during the 14th and 15th centuries.

Seven successive French popes transformed Avignon into one of the most glamorous medieval courts in Europe. The towns expansion gradually became increasingly more splendid and the pontificates dependence on French royalty became further entrenched.

Eze France

Amidst the marvelous coastal landscape of the French Cote DAzur lies the picturesque medieval village of Eze.

The main part of the village that can still be seen today was created in the 10th century, during the Middle Ages.Tranquility seems almost to overflow from quaint windows onto the streets of this charming village in which its narrow alleyways and stone buildings mix with the lush green of the trees.

Eze radiates summer freshness and in a magical kind of way, light and shadow unite to form a magnificent picture of pure beauty.

Breathtaking, panoramic views down to the Mediterranean are an additional treat and, located around the villages castle, the Cactus Garden is yet another attraction.

For real old world charm, this is the place to be!

Global Treasures NOTRE DAME Paris, France

It is believed that the origin of the richly decorated Episcopal cathedral of Notre Dame dates back to the time of Bishop Maurice De Sully in 1163. But the majority of the cathedral's present day architecture with its strange and fantastic creatures of ancient mythology, such as the chimeras, was designed in the 19th century.

The church owes much of its fame to the famous French author, Victor Hugo and his book The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, a great classic of French literature. The stone chimeras are reminiscent of the book's main character, Quasimodo.

The remarkable and beautifully designed rose windows in the transept are particularly noteworthy as each is original and dates back to 1270 A.D.

In 1804 Napoléon Bonaparte was crowned emperor in Notre Dame by Pope Pius The Seventh on this famous island on the River Seine, the Ile De La Cité.

For the French nation the historic importance of this impressive monument is inestimable.

Global Treasures DINAN Bretagne, France

Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance and is one of the most beautiful and well preserved medieval towns in Brittany.

Today, cobbled lanes and several half-timbered buildings highlight the town's colourful history and in 1066 many of Dinan´s inhabitants took part in the Norman Conquest and the Hundred Years´ War also left its traces here. However, despite its battles and sieges the picturesque old town has survived to the present day and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Brittany.

The town´s defences were constructed in the 14th century. A circular wall, two and a half kilometres long, protected the inhabitants of Dinan from hostile attack.

Due to its well planned defences the town remained untouched and even today it's like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

7 Days PROVENCE France

Marseille is the oldest city in France, the country's largest commercial harbour and the capital of Provence, an enchanting region full of contrast. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the fifth century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. Aix-En-Provence, along with its numerous lanes, is one of the most beautiful cities in France. More than forty spectacular fountains help to cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. 'Sur Le Pont D'Avignon' are the words of the world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge as that is the location of its bars! For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the city of Nîmes. It is the capital of the Departement Gard that is situated on the periphery of Provence. One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. The town was established in 1240. From the city wall that is eleven metres high and six metres thick, there is a wonderful view across the rooftops of the impregnable city. With historic towns in which both the Romans and the Papacy felt at home, and with blossoming fields of lavender and ancient mountain villages, Provence is a land of sweet aromas and radiant light.

Global Treasures CARNAC Carnac Stones Bretangne, France

The megaliths of Carnac in Brittany are stone relics that are thousands of years old and date back to the middle of the Neolithic period. Four long avenues of mighty stone known as 'alignments' extend across eight kilometres of scenic terrain.

The Kerzerho Stones are one of the most splendid alignments in Carnac. They consist of more than eleven hundred stones and cover an area of almost two kilometres. But what significance did this formation have with its Neolithic creators and how were they able to transport these massive stones? The stones will probably never reveal their secrets but many historians and archaeologists believe that they were connected with some kind of religious belief.

The area around Carnac also contains numerous intriguing Dolmen, a series of vertical stones that support a large slab, a kind of stone table. Along the northern border of Plouharnel Village there is a fine example of this unique construction that dates back to the Stone Age, the Dolmen of Rondonssec.

The large number of Dolmen indicates that the region was once not only of great astronomical importance but was also used as a burial site. It is not known who was buried here but they may have been tribal and religious leaders as well as those who had made an important contribution to the well-being of the tribe.

For several centuries the tranquil and mysterious atmosphere of this place has fascinated all those who have experienced it. The megaliths of Carnac are masterpieces of prehistoric architecture and grand monuments that have survived time itself.

Global Treasures ARLES Provence, France

A beautiful fountain with an Egyptian obelisk graces the Place De La République in the heart of Arles, an historic and charming small town in the south of France.

Next to the City Hall is the Romanic Saint Trophime Cathedral with its splendid church porch that dates back to the 12th century.

The town's Amphitheatre is the region's greatest building that has survived from the time of the Roman Empire and it is also the most important arena in the former Gallic colony. Three watchtowers that date back to the Middle Ages were left in tact by archaeologists as a reminder of the fortifications of the beautiful amphitheatre.

Arles and its magnificent cathedral soon became one of the Romans' most favoured towns and was referred to as 'Little Rome in Gaul' when more than twenty thousand spectators witnessed savage gladiatorial battle in its Amphiteatre.

Today Arles is closely associated with the name of world famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. He completed around four hundred paintings in the town.

A visit to Arles is like travelling back in time but with all the unique atmosphere of the present.

BRETAGNE

Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere medieval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen.

Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both medieval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere.

Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom.

Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident.

The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

Le Mont St.Michel

An 80 metre high mound of granite in Normandy, Le Mont-Saint-Michel, with its historic buildings is like something from a fairy tale. Powerful fortifications surround both the small town and the abbey at top of the rock, remnants of Mont-Saint-Michels dramatic past.

The three-storey monastery in the northern section, La Merveille, is one of the finest examples of French Late Gothic design. In the middle of the 10th century Benedictine monks from Saint Wandrille took over this mountain pilgrimage that soon developed into an important pilgrimage destination.

During the Hundred Years´ War between England and France the monastery increasingly grew to resemble a fortress and the historic development of the town is exhibited in numerous museums.

The repairs, extensions and decoration of the Benedictine took several hundred years thus creating a unique monument to the history of French construction that united various talented artists and architects of various epochs.

GOLFE DU MORBIHAN

The Golfe Du Morbihan is situated on the south coast of Brittany and protects the region from the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fascinating coastal landscape with huge castles and extensive sand dunes.

Influential and wealthy ship owners once settled here: they ran the East India Trading Company that earned high taxes for the French monarchy. The present day harbour makes it difficult to believe that it was once a busy centre of trade with the distant Orient but the town's well preserved buildings indicate its former wealth and ferryboats travel to the village on the opposite side of the Lorient that still boasts a splendid array of huge warehouses.

The Megaliths Of Carnac are stone relics that are thousands of years old and date back to the middle of the Neolithic Period and although they have been analysed by scientists they are nonetheless full of mystique as four long avenues of mighty stone known as 'Alignments'extend across eight kilometres of scenic terrain.

The enchanting medieval city of Auray is situated on a bend of the Rivière D`Auray that flows into the Golfe Du Morbihan. The city has earned its place in the history books of Brittany. Here, two families once fought to rule this land and a battle decided which one!

The attractive charm of the Brittany landscape owes much of its allure to its picturesque old stone houses and idyllic bays. The Golfe Du Morbihan with its numerous islands both large and small is a French paradise set along the rugged Atlantic coast

DOME DES INVALIDES The Hôtel Des Invalides was built by King Louis The Fourteenth as a home for soldiers who had been wounded in action.

Following completion of the first building construction began on the equally impressive, Dome Des Invalides. Napoleon would most likely have approved the Musée De Lármée, today's Army Museum. It contains around forty thousand exhibits including a large number of valuable weapons and armour. The collection also comprises numerous objects that date from ancient times to the present day.

The crypt of the Dome Des Invalides was specially redesigned and embellished by famous architect, Visconti, in order that it would be suitable to house the final remains of the once all-powerful Napoleon Bonaparte. Global Treasures AIGUES - MORTES Provence, France

One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to obeyed!

The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture.

King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king's crusade to Egypt, the town's inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town's inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history.

But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

Les Baux de Provence

Surrounded by the attractive provincial mountain landscape of the Alpilles there is a romantic mediaeval town high on a rock, Les Baux-De-Provence, located 400 metres above the Crau Valley. The historic origins of the village date back to the first millennium A.D.

Located in the lower, busier part of the town, the Saint Vincent Church dates back to the 12th century and it is an atmospheric setting for famous Christmas performances such as the Shepherds´ Midnight Mass.

Archaeological discoveries and precious works of art are to be found in the Musée D´Histoire De Baux that also serves as the entrance to the upper part of the town.

In times of freedom the countrys finest troubadours gathered in the towns now ruined castle.Immortalized by a monument, the farmer poet, Charles Rieu, is considered to have been a fine exponent of this age-old tradition. However, in 1483 the art of the troubadour grew silent and was replaced by the sound of battle when the powerful catapults of Ludwig The Eleventh destroyed large sections of the castle.

Vista Point NICE France

Nice is the Côte D`Azur's fascinating and colourful city located on the curve of Angel Bay, a metropolis that has lost little of its turn of the century charm. It is also a place of contrast with all the pulsating life of an international city mixed with the rich Mediterranean flair of the south.

The magnificent Promenade Des Anglais, named after the resort's former large contingent of English visitors, was built during the19th century.

The historical centre of the city, Vielle Ville, has become the home of Arabian immigrants, thus couscous features prominently on the menu. The old fish market is the most beautiful on the entire Côte D`Azur and its traditional displays of seafood are a feast to the eye.

The Russian Tsars also spent much time in Nice and in around 1900 a Russian Orthodox church was built. With its six eye-catching onion-shaped domes, it was designed by the Russian architect, Preobrajensky, and is the most beautiful example of its kind in the western hemisphere. The foundations of the building were designed in the shape of a Greek crucifix and the interior features a remarkable collection of Russian icons.

A good way to visit numerous places of interest is by taking a journey on a small sightseeing train known as the Azur Express.

Just outside Nice there are some remarkable Roman ruins and a villa on the excavated site contains the Matisse Museum that features each of the famous artist's sculptures.

Nice is more than 'nice' -- joie de vivre never had it so good!

Nature Wonders CAMARGUE Provence/France

The unique landscape of the region along the Rhône Delta in France known as the Camargue is relatively young. It is believed that it grew to its present size of approximately ninety five thousand hectares in around 8,000 B.C.

A number of the region's inhabitants are as famous as the landscape of the South of France such as the famous white horses of the Camargue.

Bulls are extremely popular with the local inhabitants. They are often the centre of attention during the region's mostly non-bloody bull fights known as 'Corridas'.

Up to the end of September the farmland of the Camargue's rice farmers is flooded with water up to twenty centimetres deep but there are also colourful fields with an abundance of sunflowers. However, the cultivation of rice also has its drawbacks. Due to the increasing desalinisation of the land the fragile ecosystem is gradually being undermined. However, the people of the Camargue are well aware of this danger to their wildlife and are actively engaged in preserving their unique world of swamps.

The massive tower of Saint Ronan Church rises above the village of Locronan and its eight hundred inhabitants in the French region of Brittany. In the 15th century the sleepy village developed into a prosperous sail-making centre until the arrival of successful competition and lower prices.

The village owes its popularity to the old architecture and dark grey granite buildings that lie at the historic heart of Locronan. The sudden loss of prosperity meant that there was insufficient money either to maintain the buildings or to construct new ones. Thus a walk through the picturesque village is like a fascinating journey back to the time of the French Renaissance.

Famous film directors such as Roman Polanski have used the village's unique scenery as a backdrop to their movies. With all the evocative ambience of this wonderful place and far away from the noise of motor vehicles, it's like being in another world.

Global Treasures VERSAILLES Chateau De Versailles Paris

Versailles was the former palace and dream castle of the French 'Sun King', Louis the Fourteenth. The history of Versailles covers the rise and fall of the Bourbons whose reign covered the most remarkable period of French history. Here, the French king lavishly entertained the decadent nobility, oblivious to the unrest caused by their false pride, supreme arrogance and almost total disregard for the poverty of the French people that would eventually lead to Revolution.

Magnificent fountains decorate the palace's huge park that was created by 35,000 workers, a hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. Drawn by four horses, the god Apollo emerges from the waters of a fountain. This and further fountains and ponds were designed by Tuby and Lenotre, and are masterpieces of both garden design and the sculptor`s art. Playful figures and statues adorn the park's many paths and even today emanate the joy and merriment of past days.

Construction of the royal palace was completed some time after that of the gardens. The palace was to be the epitome of majestic splendour and was designed to accommodate the entire French Court: 20,000 people!

Containing more than 700 lavish rooms, the palace is a unique architectural masterpiece. In the opulence of the private rooms there are grand four-poster beds and splendid canopies. Ceiling paintings, gold and marble intarsia, carvings, goblins and superb crystal chandeliers are an indication of some of the king's creative ideas that Lebrun realised in exemplary style.

Versailles served as the model for several European palaces such as those in Potsdam, Vienna and St. Petersburg. However, it continues to be a unique monument of unashamed splendour and supreme opulence.

Global Treasures LOUVRE Musee Du Louvre Palais Du Louvre

The Louvre in Paris is, literally, a palace of art as for more than two centuries this former castle of the Kings of France has contained one of the greatest and most famous art museums in the world.

The origins of the Louvre date back to the 13th century. Originally, the building resembled a simple fortress until King Carl The Fifth made the building his personal residence. In 1546 the French architect Pierre Lescot received an order from King Franz The First to build a brand new Renaissance palace.

Franz The First was also responsible for the fact that a certain Andrea Del Sarto purchased the first art collection for the monarch while visiting Italy. Thus, masterpieces such as Leonardo Da Vinci´S world famous painting, the Mona Lisa, became the property of the French King.

One of the most famous and treasured paintings in the Louvre is the perfectly formed statue of Aphrodite, better known as the Venus De Milo. In addition to various collections from the Oriental, Greek, Roman and Etruscan periods, the Egyptian section is particularly impressive.

Each year six million visitors pour into the former royal residence of the Louvre, majestic home to much of the world's most treasured works of art.
